I recently watched the documentary "The 11th Hour" a film that highlights the tremendous stress we have placed on the planet through our continual consumption and focus on economic growth with lack of regard for the natural world and our connection to it. The film indicates that we are at a breaking point and that a change in our treatment of our environment needs to happen now.
I couldn't agree more, the connection we have with the natural world seems to be flickering out to a dim light that is only used for harvesting mass supplies to build and create disposable toxic items for our personal use. It is truly sickening to think of all the crap people buy each day and how much crap people throw out each day. Our society has seemingly no regard for it's level of consumption and true connection to the place the materials are harvested from to support that consumption. Almost everything that fills our lives is disposable, useless in a few years, out of date, or out of style in a short period of time.
People have lost a connection to where food comes from to where garbage goes. People have become detached from everything but working, shopping, and eating. It's sad. We are in little bubbles that need to be broken. We need to snap into the reality of the world that life is about more than consuming. We need to snap into the reality that if we continue consuming and continue without regard to the earth, our home, our very lives will be at stake.
This is no paranoid or outrageous view to hold, that our rape of the natural world threatens the survival and health of our species. Our health is already affected by unclean water and air due to pollution. Thousands of animal species are already gone due to our disregard for the world. We are killing the planet and killing ourselves. We need to change.
